Answer: One. Deuteronomy 6:4 is the foundational verse of the Torah: - Hear Israel! The LORD our God, the LORD is One! - If you didn't already know - the letters of 'LORD' are all capitals because it is written as a replacement word for the proper name of God. That word is taken to be so holy, that we can't even write it down, let alone say it aloud. Therefore from this verse, we know that the LORD is the one and only God. Is the Father God? Yes. Jesus prayed to the Father [1] and identified the Father with the Holy Name [2]. The Father raised Jesus from death [3]. Therefore the Father is God. Is the Holy Spirit God? Yes. The Holy Spirit is forever in existence [4], is preeminently holy [5], shares the Holy Name of God [6], and raised Jesus from death [7]. Therefore the Holy Spirit is God. Is Jesus God? Yes. Jesus raised himself from death [8], created all things [9], shares the Holy Name [10], and is forever in existence [11]. Therefore Jesus is God. If there is only one God, how can all three be God? The Bible doesn't say how - only that it is so. We should keep in mind that God exists without dimension and time, and creates energy ex nihilo, even though these things are inconceivable to us. If we accept and believe this, how then, is it impossible for God to exist in three, simultaneous persons? An incomplete understanding of a concept can not be taken as evidence for the impossibility of that concept. For example, we may not know the precise architecture of each chip in our computer, but the computer continues to function (ideally). Simple people can only view the Father-Son relationship in terms of familiar biological entities. We must take care, however, not to confine God to our own limitations, and should accept as true those things that are true, even if the mechanism is not entirely understood. As always, absolute Biblical statements are taken as absolute truth in Christian practice. Christians should expect omnipotence from our Creator [12]. |
