Answer: Yes. In answering any of these questions, the Bible is taken as the authoritative textbook. There are many opinions as to the nature of Hell, but here, only the definitive Biblical statements are taken as fact. The King James Version of the Bible lumps several terms for a non-heaven state together - sh'eol, hades, gehenna, and their variants - as hell. There are 54 references to 'hell' in the Bible [1]. From these, we determine that not all can mean the same place [2]. What we popularly mean by Hell is a final state of body and soul, that is, the final judgement and residence of Satan. What is it like? The Bible is somewhat cryptic here, and it is reasonable to assume that the truth is beyond our comprehension. We may conclude, however, that Hell is a place of eternal torment, beyond the limits of every wretched nightmare we've ever had. All the references point this direction, but none of them are explicit on every point. Who goes there? Satan and his angels go there [3], as do his endtimes accomplices [4]. The next group of residents are those "not found written in the book of life" [5]. Who are those not found written in the book of life? - That book is sealed, and no one in this life may know [6]. In as much as we know our own soul, we may know if our name is recorded there (see the 'Good News' button on the home page), but to make a judgement regarding the destiny of another soul is to place ourselves equal to the Judge. |
